Howard Lederer was born into in a family of 5 in which he enjoyed betting on different card games when he was young. He found himself getting very competitive in these particular card games while competing against his dad. After graduating from Sr. High school, Howard decided to put college on hold for a little while and moved away to New York to play some big-time chess. While participating in chess, he was introduced to a poker game taking place in the back of the room. Howard’s first 2 years were tough as he would play extensive hours and do not win a majority of the time. He made some additional cash by being an assistant for the poker players. He theorized he could boost his game by balancing his life away from poker. He brought about an attempt to get more sleep and concentrate more on the game.
The definite advancement in his abilities began when he started wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York City. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon association where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently wager against each other. Howard had access into a few of the foremost minds in chess. With their help, he would sharpen his logical thinking techniques. Howard applied these strategic ideas to the game of No-Limit hold’em.
Howard Lederer also helped his sibling Annie Duke learn the game of poker. Annie was an excellent student of the game as she constantly asked questions about how to make the correct decision. Howard told Annie Duke to move out to Las Vegas and compete in the WSOP competition. Annie is one of the strongest female players the poker arena has ever seen. He relocated to Sin City in 1993 and played money games for the next decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, Howard decided to participate in more tournaments.
