Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is frequently seen as one of the most difficult but favored poker variations. It is a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible game, has increased in popularity so rapidly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are dealt to each player. A round of wagering follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or drop out. 3 cards are dealt out, this is called the flop. One more sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have in turn called or folded, an additional card is flipped on the turn. a further round of wagering happens and then the river card is revealed. The players will have to make the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where a number of entrants get confused. Unlike Holdem, in which the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player has to use precisely 3 cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot can be won: the "higher hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It is the strongest possible hand out of every player’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the identical approach in nearly all poker games.
A low hand is more difficult, but certainly free’s up the play. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. A low hand is the worst hand that could be made, with the lowest being made up of A-2-3-4-5. Since straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.
Although it seems complex initially, after a few hands you will be agile enough to get the base nuances of play with ease. Since you have people betting for the low and betting for the high, and since so many cards are in play, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting assortment of betting choices and owing to the fact that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with a few shooting for the low hand. If you like a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to play Omaha/8.
