Howard Lederer lived in a family of five where he enjoyed participating in different card games at a young age. He found himself becoming very aggressive in these particular card games as he was playing his father. After finishing high school, Howard decided to place higher education on hold for a little while and headed to New York City to participate in some serious chess. While competing in chess, he was introduced to a poker game going on in the back of the room. Howard’s 1st 2 years were tough as he would play many hours and lost a majority of the time. He made some extra cash by becoming an runner for the poker players. He theorized he might boost his game by balancing his life outside of poker. He brought about an effort to get more rest and focus more on poker.
The definite advancement in his game began when he began wagering at the Mayfair Club in New York. The Mayfair was a bridge and backgammon club where the the most favorable gamblers would frequently compete against one another. He was able to access some of the foremost minds in chess. With their assistance, Howard would tweak his strategic thinking abilities. He used these strategy concepts in the game of NL hold’em.
Howard Lederer also assisted his sister Annie Duke learn the game of poker. She was a great student of the game as she would always be asking questions about how to make the correct decision. He told Annie to move out to Sin City and play in the World Series of Poker competition. Annie Duke is one of the greatest female players the poker world today. Howard Lederer relocated to Sin City in 1993 and participated in cash games for the subsequent decade. When the World Poker Tournament grew in popularity, he made the decision to play more tournaments.
